PROMINENT MOGAVEERAS |
Introduction
› |
It is difficult to get all the names of prominent Mogaveeras in all the fields |
› |
Fishing is the main profession of Mogaveeras. Mogaveeras mostly being illiterate till the beginning of the 20th century, did not record the names of eminent fishermen having traditional knowledge like identifying schools of fish, forecast of storm, prediction of availability of fish based on wind direction, color of the sea water etc. The names of eminent Gurikaras of Hobalies , important Samyukta Patnas and Grama Sabhas are not recorded anywhere. Prominent names Tandelas of Rampanies are not available. |
› |
Some prominent Mogaveeras have contributed in more than one field. In such a case, their names are mentioned under only one category. |
› |
So far as professionals are concerned, it is difficult to enlist all the names because there are a large number of doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, advocates, other professionals, post graduates and people who held high posts in governments and private sector. Only few names are selected on the basis of either they are the first or prominent in the profession. |
› |
However, it will be a good idea to compile a complete list of Mogaveera Graduates and professional degree holders which will give a fair idea. This cannot be attempted here. |
› |
The names of the eminent businessmen are selected on the basis of previous published records. |
› |
If there are any mistakes or omissions, it is not intentional. There is scope for correction. |

Important points to Remember
1 |
The outcome of the three battles with Portuguese in the year 1555, 1567 and 1581 were decided at sea. Shri Chennapa Gurikara, the Principal Naval Commander had participated in all the above three decisive battles. |
2 |
First Queen Abbakka participated in the year 1555 battle but was stationed at the shore. She was killed by Portuguese by firing from sea. The second Queen Abbakka participated in battle 1567 and 1581. Mogaveera Naval Commanders persuaded Queen Abbakka to participate in naval battle at sea in the year 1581 promising to protect her at any cost which they did. Shri Kunja Marakala, who took the responsibility to protect Queen Abbakka and had successfully, accomplished the allotted task. He is credited with strategizing Naval Battle which earned him hatred from Portuguese who held him responsible for their defeat. |
3 |
The role played by Mogaveera Naval Commanders, scarifies made by Mogaveera men and contributions of materials (wooden fishing boats and fire powers) were responsible for decisive victories. It was widely recorded by Indian and foreign historians that European powers had sent their emissaries to study and understand the Naval warfare techniques used by Mogaveera Naval Commanders who used only wooden fishing boats but succeeded in defeating Portuguese Naval Armada consisting of large warships, trained Naval warriors who were well armed. |
4 |
It appears that recorded history and folklores did not give due credit to the Mogaveera community’s sacrifices. It is necessary to put the fact on record. |
